Around Lake Constance, for example, in Meersburg or Überlingen, there are a relatively large number of holiday homes that are rented out to students over the winter. As the accommodation situation in Konstanz at the start of the winter semester is comparatively quite stressful, you could at any rate tide yourself over for the first few months and then look for accommodation locally.
Registration at residents’ registration office/Secondary residence tax
Living in Germany
In accordance with the Federal Registration Act, you must register at the residents’ registration office within one week of moving into your accommodation. Only applies to Konstanz: at the beginning of the semester, the citizens’ registration office can be accessed at the university and at the Hochschule Konstanz University of Applied Sciences (HTWG), in other words, you can register directly on site at your university.
Please note that if you wish to register your place of residence as your secondary residence, then a secondary residence tax will become due.
Students can normally obtain a ‘Wohnberechtigung’ (entitlement to accommodation) for Switzerland without any problem. You must either apply for this at the registry office in Konstanz or at the residents’ registration office in Kreuzlingen:
