What is the Study Start Assistance?

It is a one-off grant of €1,000 that does not have to be repaid. You can apply for it at the Office for Educational Support in Konstanz until the end of the month after you start your studies. You can receive this one-time payment even if you are not receiving BAföG.

It is intended to help you get started with your studies, for example by covering relocation costs or the purchase of technical equipment or study materials. Ongoing expenses such as rent and living costs can be covered by BAföG.
Most people who are eligible for Study Start Assistance are also entitled to BAföG, so it is worth submitting an additional application.

Who is eligible for Study Start Assistance?

You may receive the Study Start Assistance if you:

  • are under 25 years old;
  • are enrolled for the first time on a full-time degree programme at a university
  • received social benefits (see list) in the month before you start your studies.
These benefits qualify you for funding.
