Are legal jargon and long-winded sentences not for you? Do you find application forms far too complicated? We must admit that the BAföG application process is very complex. But it is worthwhile because you can receive money from the state and in the end you are only required to pay back half the amount borrowed. It is precisely for this reason that we are glad to provide you with advice and further assistance if you have any questions regarding BAföG.
up to €992 per month
50% granted as a non-repayable allowance, 50% as an interest-free loan
maximum repayment amount: €10,010
repayment begins five years after the end of the standard period of study, in small instalments
You can submit a BAföG application at any time – the earlier, the better. Processing takes some time, and funding is granted at the earliest from the month in which your application is received. The fastest and easiest way to apply is online via BAföG digital.
If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible for BAföG at all, or if you can’t gather all the required information and documents quickly, we recommend the following: submit an informal application as early as possible. This secures the deadline – especially important if your studies are about to begin – and allows you to take your time afterward to gather information and submit the complete application as soon as possible.
Our FAQ section offers initial guidance on the next steps. Learn about the benefits of BAföG digital, or – if you prefer the traditional approach – download all the necessary forms here. If you are under 25, starting your first degree programme, and have previously received social benefits, you can apply for Study Start Assistance in addition to BAföG.
