Bridging aid from the Federal Government starts again
Students who have got into financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic, for example because they have lost their part-time job, can apply for a non-repayable grant again from 20 November 2020. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is providing the funds for this to the Studierendenwerke.
Regardless of age or number of semesters, students can receive the grant of at least 100 to a maximum of 500 euros per month from November 2020 to March 2021. In order to receive the grant, they must prove their need on a monthly basis and reapply for each new grant. The amount depends on the account balance of the affected students at the time of application. The grant does not have to be repaid. Students can submit their application via an online portal.
In cooperation with the DSW, the umbrella organisation of German "Studierendenwerke", the BMBF has revised and simplified the guidelines for bridging assistance. For example, students can now prove their emergency situation by unsuccessful applications for jobs. There are also simplifications in the proof of account balance.
To enable us to process applications and pay out the funds promptly, we have set up a team of around 10 employees who will support our social counselling office in this task.
